Scroll down for a short video of Sketchbook/Travel Journal: Camino de Santiago.
This video is about a five week pilgrimage with my amazing daughter, Chandler. We hiked from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 500 miles on foot. This is my daily sketchbook/journal created along the way.
I am currently working on a series of self-portraits. In order to expand my painting practice in terms of creative risk taking and to overcome the idea that each canvas must be precious and archival I’m painting on recycled cardboard, a material that is both disposable and ubiquitous: It is EVERYWHERE. In preparation for this project I cut one hundred pieces of cardboard to 8 x 10 inches and applied a coat of grey gesso to each.
With each painting I’m wrestling with the questions, Who am I as an artist and where am I going? A biblical story comes to mind from Mark 5 where Jesus encounters a demon possessed man living alone among tombs. Jesus asked for his name and he said, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” With each painting I’m pulling out of myself another potential artistic direction as I tap into the subconscious and explore different facets of my emotional life. For some I have found inspiration in the self portraits of other artists who surely were haunted by these same questions. My goal is to achieve more depth, self awareness and creative courage with each of these "many" paintings.
